I was so touched to hear psychologist Martha Beck discuss how she approached having a son with Down’s Syndrome in this podcast episode (discussion starts at 28 min):
I have a son with Down’s Syndrome, and he’s been a HUGE teacher of mine. […]
When he was born people told me there were lots of therapies. You can teach them to almost act like other kids. […]
You know if I went to a pet store for a puppy, […] and I came home with a pet that turned out to be a kitten. […] And people say it’s okay, you can work with these kittens. You can teach them to kind of bark, and sort of wag their tails.
And I thought: what about maybe cats are kind of cool? Maybe I’ll wait and see what a cat likes to do. And it’s okay that I have a cat and you have a dog. Even if you don’t think it’s okay, I am enjoying it.
I read books saying, you will always be ashamed of your child. I was like, naaaah, don’t think so.
