I just ran across an org called Whole Plant Access for Autism (WPAA), who are helping families decide if cannabis is an option for their autistic kids. They discuss how they’ve helped their own kids in this webinar from the Farmacy Cannabis Lecture Series:
I’ve talked about how life-changing cannabis has been for me, and while the research on cannabis for autism is just beginning, there are very encouraging results from clinical trials like the recent 2021 study from Bonnie Goldstein’s lab.
It’s powerful for me to hear families with kids on the spectrum having their lives vastly improved by cannabis. And there’s a growing body of evidence that autism at its core is in fact a difference in the way the Endocannabinoid System (ECS) works. The phytocannabinoids in cannabis seem to be supplementing the endogenous cannabinoids generated by the ECS.
Hi PJ - I’m curious about whether you think addiction risk might, for some, outweigh benefits? I’m working with someone who is ASD and uses marijuana to - what appears to outsiders - excess. Of course no one is in his head, so no one understands the struggle he endures and is medicating. Curious what your thoughts are.
Thank you for sharing! As autistic mental health professional, I’m glad this is being explored. I wanted to share this resource for you and others. It has already been great for my own sense of community support: https://www.autisticpsychedelic.com
PJ, Thank you~Nia
