I’ve published a book of poetry! Flight of the Starling is now available for order!
The practice I’m leaning into right now is finishing things. Get them into the world, even if they’re kind of rough. Especially when they’re kind of rough. Julia Cameron writes decisively about the folly of perfectionism in art, in her book The Artist’s Way. Art, she says, is the process of getting something down, not thinking something up. Art is really a verb, masquerading as a noun.
I’ve been posting Flight of the Starling here as each act of the poem has come to me. I realized recently that the poem felt complete, and it was time to share it.
For me, Flight of the Starling embodies the experience of being curious about the universe I live in, and also terrified by it. The Starling has to make a seemingly impossible choice: to jump, or not to jump. Jumping requires trust in his new wings. And heeding a mysterious voice on the wind.
I can lean into change when I have confidence in my wings. But what about that first leap? There’s no confidence yet, because confidence comes through practice and repetition. That first leap … is a leap of faith.
Please consider getting a copy if you’d like to support my work in the autism community and beyond.
